Who Can Join Us?

The IHRFG is open to all grantmakers concerned about the state of human rights in the world, not just those with human rights funding programs.   Indeed, whether you make grants in this or another field we hope you will join our diverse group.  Here you will meet long-time human rights funders; those interested in adding a human rights component to their current grantmaking; others exploring links with their current programs, such as development, peace and security, population and the environment; and still others who simply want to know more about human rights at home and abroad.

IHRFG is open to staff, consultants and trustees of private foundations, public charities (public foundations and community foundations) whose primary activity is grantmaking and who do not relate to other members primarily as grantseekers, corporate foundations and community giving programs, governmental giving programs, faith-based giving programs, philanthropic advocacy and support organizations and individual philanthropists with significant giving programs.

Because IHRFG's membership includes self-funded grantmakers as well as grantmakers who must raise their funds, IHRFG has adopted a policy prohibiting fundraising and solicitation while participating in activities sponsored by IHRFG.

Members include U.S. foundations of all sizes — from the Ford Foundation, Open Society Institute and MacArthur Foundation, to the John Merck Fund, Overbrook Foundation and Public Welfare Foundation. The IHRFG is committed to including grantmakers from all parts of the world and is delighted by the recent membership of funders in Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Dues?

IHRFG dues are voluntary, apply to member institutions (not individuals), and based on foundation size. While we strongly encourage the contribution of dues, the full benefits of IHRFG membership remain open to all, regardless of contribution.
