ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

Universal human rights are often expressed and guaranteed by law, in the forms of treaties, customary international law, general principles and other sources of international law. International human rights law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals or groups. –  The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

A HUMAN RIGHTS FRAMEWORK

“...The term human rights is often used interchangeably to reference several distinct things: a felt belief in the inherent dignity and equality of all people; a set of ethical values and standards, codified in international law; a system of international courts and mechanisms set up to enforce and monitor agreements underpinning that law; and a set of specific advocacy principles, strategies, and methods. Collectively, these values, legal standards, principles and strategies make up what advocates call a “human rights framework.” To “take a human rights approach” to domestic social justice means to incorporate some or all of these elements into one’s advocacy and organizing in order, in some fundamental way, to transform the work.” – The U.S. Human Rights Fund’s Perfecting Our Union, Human Rights Success Stories from Across the United States

FUNDING HUMAN RIGHTS: AN INVITATION

This booklet, produced by the International Human Rights Funders Group, is an attempt to share an enormous gift— human rights and their potential to transform people’s lives. Funders are continuously learning from their grantees as they carry forth in their courageous and vital efforts to realize the promise of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We have compiled some of these stories in this booklet.
